A visual guide to the making of an observatory

The way it looks now: January 13, 2007.

Welcome to a work in progress.

1) Making the pier

...or walls, for that matter. This has been my set up since spring 2005 until the beginning of the construction of the observatory building (end of May 2006). To protect the scope I use several layers of water proof material capped by a large and very tough green bag. As horrifying as it may seem the telescope has survived a very wet fall, a very cold winter and a pretty horrible spring.

2) Floor and walls

The beginning of the journey.

3) Tracks for the sliding roof

The sliding roof is actually divided in two halves that joins in the middle. I was full aware that most people consider this design an absolute no - no but the design simply had too many advantages to be passed over. Details about design and construction of the two sets of tracks.

4) The roof

Form and function of the sliding roof.
